With the support of EDUKIDS, a young delegate from Ukraine, Oleksandr, represented our country at the Eurochild Children’s Council (ECC) in Brussels – a platform that brings together children from across Europe for dialogue with European institutions.
The meeting began at the Eurochild office with an introduction to the newly elected President, Vice-President, and Board members. The following day focused on skills development and direct interaction with European institutions. The programme included public speaking training and discussions with representatives of the European Commission’s Directorates-General, as well as the Vice-President of the European Parliament, Ewa Kopacz. During these sessions, young delegates presented a child- friendly version of the European Commission’s report on mental health.
The highlight of the visit was the celebration of World Children’s Day at the European Parliament on 20 November. Oleksandr opened the event with a speech reminding participants that the war in Ukraine continues and calling on European institutions to strengthen efforts to protect children. The main session focused on inclusion and anti- bullying, with ECC delegates engaging directly with Members of the European Parliament, demonstrating meaningful child participation in democratic processes.
As part of the visit, Oleksandr and the EDUKIDS team also met with representatives of the European Commission’s Directorate-General for Enlargement and the Eastern Neighbourhood (DG ENEST). The discussion addressed current priorities regarding Ukraine and the key challenges facing Ukrainian children, including safety, access to education, and the psychological impact of the war.
The key takeaway from the meeting is clear: there is a direct and meaningful dialogue between children and European institutions, in which children have a real influence on decisions shaping their lives and future.
